A special program to remove stray dogs from the city during the Kandy Esala Perahera season is currently being implemented by the Municipal Veterinary Department.

A special program to remove stray dogs from the city during the Kandy Esala Perahera season is currently being implemented by the Municipal Veterinary Department. As of today, 25.08.2026, 39 stray dogs have been captured. At the special request of Mrs. Indika Kumari Abeysinghe, Municipal Commissioner of Kandy, the Central Province Director of the Department of Animal Production and Health, Gannoruwa, has made arrangements to house these animals in cages at the Gannoruwa Veterinary Hospital. The detained animals are being provided with necessary food, treatment, cleaning, sterilization surgeries, and anti-rabies vaccinations.
